Jano has always known he is Gifted. In his small village, that is simply part of who he is. But when circumstances beyond his control force him from the only home he has ever known, the young villager finds himself travelling through a Sinterland world far larger, stranger and more complicated than anything he imagined.

His journey brings unexpected friendships, unfamiliar places and encounters that slowly reveal both the possibilities of his Gift and the responsibilities that accompany it. From Dannid’s forge to distant ports, across the Centre Lands and eventually to the great White City, Jano discovers that understanding people may prove considerably harder than understanding the powers within himself.

Waiting at the end of the road is the School of the Right, where generations of Gifted have learned their craft. Yet the School Jano finds is not the institution others remember. Something has changed, old certainties are being challenged, and forces beyond its walls have begun to gather.

With an old dog at his side and remarkably little idea of what lies ahead, Jano is about to discover that reaching the end of one journey can sometimes be the beginning of a much greater one.
